Injury Prevention
Injuries may be regarded as ‘intentional’ – i.e. deliberately inflicted by another person, or ‘unintentional’ (sometimes referred to as ‘accidents').
In Flintshire, we do not use the term 'accident' because most injuries are preventable.
Each year, it is estimated that over 6,100 children in Flintshire will attend hospital as a result of an injury. Approximately half of these injuries occur in the home, and are potentially preventable. Similarly, an estimated 6,600 people over the age of 50 will experience a fall each year, with over 1,300 incidents requiring medical attention and approximately 600 fractures.
For the very young and older people, the majority of unintentional injuries occur in or around the home.
Injuries cause between 3 and 4% of all deaths of Flintshire residents and represent the leading cause of death in young people.
There can be serious long-term consequences for people’s health and well-being and for health care and social care service provision following an injury.
Work is currently taking place to develop an action plan to tackle some of the most common causes of unintentional injuries in the home and in the community.
