Did you know....

"" The rates of Sexually Transmitted Infections in Wales is increasing. Whilst they have increased dramatically in recent years, it is important to note that they still remain lower than those observed in many parts of the UK.

Did you know....

"" In the mid to late nineties, the teenage conception rate for females aged under 16 in Wales was above that for England. However, the conception rate for under 16 year olds in Flintshire is below the average for Wales: 6.6 per 1,000 females aged 13 to 15 years compared with 8.0 per 1,000 across Wales.

In Flintshire, we are attempting to tackle these issues through a number of projects:

"" Flintshire Youth & Community Sex and Relationships Education project is a comprehensive programme which operates across the County.
The overall aim of the project is to raise awareness of sexual health issues amongst young people aged 11-25. The project is delivered through formal and informal education in Schools, Colleges and Youth Clubs. The project offers educational opportunities to young people, enabling them to explore and develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to identify and pursue their responsibilities and rights as informed members of society.
"" One initiative of the project is the C Card scheme. The scheme targets young people between the ages 13 – 25 among whom rates of STI’s and unplanned/unwanted pregnancy are highest. Condoms and supporting material are provided in a dignified and confidential manner leading to raised awareness about relationships, safer sex, unplanned pregnancies, STI’s and HIV. Discussions are often triggered through this contact with young people about a range of sexual health issues and links can be made with other sexual health services. The scheme offers young people quick and easy access to condoms, within a safe environment where it is easy to seek advice and information about sexual health topics and relationships.

The Sex and Relationships Education project is coordinated by Bev Baines with assistant worker Katie Gardener.
